Serving the Community One Book at a Time
Who doesn’t love spotting a well deserved shout-out to some of their favorite good-doers? Imagine our delight in spotting a Libros Schmibros tee (printed here at Ellen’s, naturally) while binge-watching one of Netflix’s newest series, Gentefied.
The show follows the lives of a Boyle Heights family as they navigate the changes to their rapidly gentrifying neighborhood. One of the characters, after encouraging local kids to read by rewarding their efforts with free tacos, takes his mission to the streets with his book cart. His fictional act of community good was clearly inspired by real life organization Libros Schmibros, a bilingual lending library in Boyle Heights. Beyond providing the neighborhood with well over 40,000 books since 2010, Libros Schmibros also hosts children’s reading groups and guest speakers, and has an internship program for high school, undergrad, and graduate programs.
We congratulate our friends at Libros Schmibros- every bit of recognition they earn in greatly deserved!
